Gateway

A bird flies slightly lower than the others, closer to the observer. Its presence becomes a gateway for the observer to emotionally connect. This bird serves as a recipient of the scenery and eventually becomes a guide for the viewer.

Mugi-san's illustration is achieving wonderful effects. It depicts a delightful emotion overflowing from beyond the light, bringing smiles to the faces of dementia patients. Mugi-san's concept is clearly reaching the patients. It feels as though there is no better form of treatment than this.

Supporting Emotional Well-being in Dementia Care

01

Clinical Observation

My artwork has been displayed in a Japanese hospital specializing in emotional therapy for dementia care. After a painting was installed in a hospital corridor, physicians reported that emotional changes were observed in several patients. One female patient, a former organist who had performed internationally, described the artwork as “a light entering the hallway.” Her expression softened, she smiled more often, and her daily mood appeared brighter.
Nurses and caregivers who had been supporting her since the early stages of her care also shared similar observations, commenting that “she seemed like a different person — much brighter than before.

02

Context

My work does not treat dementia. Rather, its role is to support emotional stability by creating moments of calm, safety, and gentle joy within medical environments

03

Scientific Background

Research in neuroscience and cognitive psychology suggests that positive emotional states can influence attention, memory, and cognitive flexibility. When the nervous system shifts into a calm and pleasant state, cognitive processes may function in a more adaptive and supportive way.

04

Role of MUGI Art

In this sense, my art functions as environmental support within care environments. By creating spaces where the mind can settle and emotional balance becomes easier, the artwork helps support environments in which patients may spend their daily time with greater calm and comfort.

Perplexity

Concept of Emotional Therapy for Dementia Patients:
Emotional therapy for dementia patients is a care approach that focuses on stimulating and supporting the emotional functions—such as empathy, joy, and sympathy—that are often retained even as cognitive abilities decline with dementia. This concept, developed and advocated by Masahiko Fujii, MD, PhD, and colleagues, shifts the focus from cognitive rehabilitation to emotional well-being, aiming to alleviate behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) and enhance quality of life.
